Vizio got a jump on the competition and launched the first value-priced LED TV in September at one-third the price of a comparably-sized Samsung model, and plans to follow up in 2010 with more aggressively priced LED TVs. “We will provide LED TVs in sizes smaller than 32” at prices that we believe will allow them to replace CCFL backlighting,” said Laynie Newsome, Vizio Co-founder, “We expect that TruLED and Razor LED LCD HDTVs will represent 60% of our total HDTV shipment mix in 2010.”

LED TV Prices Fall in Later Part of 2010

Differences LED vs LCD tv

Differences LED vs LCD tv

The first difference that strikes me is the price.  Currently LED televisions are about 50% more than an LCD tv. However the price gap has been narrowing and will continue to do so. An LED tv uses light emitting diodes ad its source of light for the television. An LED tv uses these diodes to create a much more vibrant and colorful image. The blacks are truly black (not dark gray) and the colors are more realistic vs an LCD tv. LED tvs can achieve a contrast ratio of up to 500,000:1. They also in general have a higher refresh rate which will help when watching shows with motion such as sports or movies.

The second major difference between LED and LCD televisions is the environmental effect.

The thickness and therefore the weight is the last major difference of LED vs LCD tvs.

LED FACTS

State of the Art Picture Quality
About 40% Less Energy usage than a same sized LCD TV
Mercury Free and a VERY Thin Design
Currently LED TV's Cost about 20-30% more

The LED TV is better. LED technology is the same thing as LCD, except it is backlit with LEDs instead of CFLs. LED backlight uses less power, is more evenly distributed throughout the screen, brighter, and improves color and contrast ratio. If you cannot afford that go for an LCD tv.

There is no such thing as a "LED" TV. That's marketing. It's just a LCD with with LED back light.  Not all LED back lit TVs have local dimming.

Some of these "LED" Tvs from samsung use edge lit LEDs, so you won't get those inky blacks because the back light illuminates the entire panel. So if you go with LED, look for "local dimming"

Next, LEDs don't solve the lag time of LCD, the off angle image shift, and it doesn't solve the motion resolution problem that LCDs have.

LCD FACTS

Good Picture Quality, but Images may "burn" in Display
Energy Costs run Between $150-200 per year to operate an LCD
Mercury IS used in Manufacturing Process
Cost is the Cheaper of the Two Choices

LED vs. LCD TV: Which is better?  Why do LCD screens need a backlight?

LED backlit TVs will change the way you think about TVs. LED TVs are slimmer, brighter, and more detailed than your traditional LCD TV.
